Black Ice is a family of frozen nether blocks added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. The family covers the solid block, a thin variant that breaks under weight, the Black Icicle that hangs from ceilings and rises from floors, and Soul Permafrost, a crafted block. The Black Ice Glaciers sub-biome of Soul Sand Valley is named for the ice. Black ice is a hazard to players: thin ice can give way under a walking player, and icicles freeze any creature they strike. The solid block and the thin block both emit light level 2.

Obtaining

Black ice is found in the nether as natural terrain. The mod's feature set places black ice clusters, streaks, surface patches, lava-freezing patches, ice ribs and thin black ice. Black Icicles also grow naturally. Black ice is crafted from Black Icicles, and it appears in the loot of Sanctum structures.

Each Sanctum food chest rolls the Black Ice entry at 100% chance, with an average of 23 pieces per chest. The Sanctum structure is described in Chapel and Sanctum.

Usage

Black Ice

Black Ice is a solid block with a hardness of 0.3 and a blast resistance of 0.3. It requires a pickaxe to be harvested. It has two active behaviours:

• Netherrack tainting. When Black Ice is placed, or a neighbouring block updates next to it, any adjacent netherrack is replaced by Pale Soul Slate. This behaviour is controlled by the blackIceTainting config option, which is on by default.
• Freezing water. Each random tick, Black Ice has a 0.6 chance (blackIceFrostsWaterChance) to pick a random horizontal neighbour. If that neighbour is a fluid in the frost tag (water, per the mod's description), it becomes Thin Black Ice.

Thin Black Ice

Thin Black Ice is a fragile version of the block with a hardness of 0.05. Its visual shape is empty, and light passes through it.

Standing on Thin Black Ice breaks it with a chance per step:

Thin ice does not break under a creature that is crouching or has the Soul Speed effect. Entities of the type tag CANT_SHATTER_THIN_BLACK_ICE also cannot break it. A broken block is removed without dropping an item. When a block of thin ice breaks, each neighbouring thin ice block breaks with a 40% chance (nearbyThinIceBreakingChance). This creates chain reactions across a sheet of thin ice. The chance drops by 0.1 for each chained break and resets when a tick breaks no neighbours.

Falling onto Thin Black Ice deals fall damage, scaled at 0.8 of the normal amount, and breaks the block when the fall is at least one block high. Thin ice is therefore a trap for players who jump or drop onto a sheet of it.

Black Icicle

Black Icicle is a pointed block with a hardness of 0.1 and a blast resistance of 3. It requires a pickaxe to harvest. It hangs from ceilings or rises from floors, has five thickness stages from tip to base, and can be waterlogged.

• Growth. Each random tick, a Black Icicle that starts a stalactite or stalagmite has a 28% chance (blackIcicleGrowthChance) to lengthen into air or water.
• Falling. A Black Icicle tip can fall as an entity. When a falling tip lands on a creature, the creature gains 400 ticks of freezing (blackIceFreezingTicks). A falling icicle that hits a creature also adds 5 ticks of freezing.
• Projectile breaking. A projectile striking a Black Icicle at a speed above 0.6 destroys the block and drops it as an item.
• Crossbow ammunition. A Black Icicle can be fired from a crossbow. A hit on a living creature adds 400 ticks of freezing, and the icicle shatters on impact.

Soul Permafrost

Soul Permafrost is a crafted block with a hardness of 0.5 and a blast resistance of 0.5. It can be harvested with a pickaxe or a shovel. It is made from two Black Ice and two soul soil.

Uses

Not used in any recipe.
