The Stampede is a hostile, fire-immune mob added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. It is a four-block-tall beast with 80 health that tramples everything in its path, takes no fall damage, and can be befriended, saddled and ridden. Hostile Stampedes are a hazard in the open nether, while a tamed or saddled one is a fast mount that can clear a path through hostile mobs.

Spawning

The Stampede spawns naturally in two biomes: Black Ice Glaciers and Soul Sand Valley, each with a spawn weight of 5. It spawns alone (group size 1). As a Monster-category mob it shares the hostile mob cap in these biomes with other Soul Sand Valley residents such as Apparition, Ecto Slab and Vessel. A Stampede spawn egg is also available.

Behavior

Movement and combat

The Stampede has a melee attack of 8 damage with a knockback value of 4. Its movement speed is 0.3 and its follow range is 32 blocks. It has no armor and a very high knockback resistance, so it is almost never pushed back by a hit. In lava it moves at 75% reduced speed.

A hostile Stampede attacks players that are angry at it. It also targets any mob with the skeleton tag, including Vessel and ordinary skeletons, but only while it is not being ridden. Its attack is melee only, so it is most dangerous at close range.

Trampling

While the Stampede moves, it tramples living entities within 1.6 blocks of its body. Each trampled entity takes damage equal to 8 × (0.5 + 2 × horizontal speed in blocks per tick), so a stationary Stampede deals 4 damage and a faster one deals more. Entities moving faster than about 0.1 blocks per tick are pushed away by 4 times the Stampede's knockback value and lifted slightly. A trampled entity can only be hit again after its own invulnerability time expires, and the Stampede is briefly invulnerable (15 ticks) after each trample. Trampling does not affect riders, other Stampedes, striders, withers, ender dragons, silverfish or endermites, which are listed in the stampede_cannot_run_over tag. On Peaceful difficulty, trampling does nothing.

Stridite shedding

Each melee attack has a 10% chance to shed one to five Stridite at the Stampede's position. Stridite is also among the Stampede's drops; see the Drops section.

Falling and jumping

The Stampede takes no fall damage. It jumps with a jump strength of 1.75 and plays a step sound with a screen shake when it leaves the ground. When it lands after falling more than 1.5 blocks, it creates a shockwave: the screen shake intensity is 0.5 plus 0.2 times the square root of the fall distance (capped at 2.0), the shake reaches up to 16 + 1.5 × fall distance blocks (capped at 48), and it lasts 5 to 15 ticks depending on the fall distance. The shockwave also sends 32 block particles from the ground under the Stampede. The screen shake can be turned off in the configuration.

Hunger, anger and calming

A Stampede has 20 hunger when it spawns, which is the maximum. While it is ridden, its hunger drops by 1 every 400 ticks (20 seconds). When its hunger reaches 0, it throws off its rider and becomes angry at that player for 20 to 39 seconds. A Stampede is also angry whenever it is hit by a player.

Feeding it calms it: a Stampede stops being angry once its hunger rises above 5. It can be fed with the following items, each taking 60 ticks to eat:

Item Healing Hunger restored
Bone / Bone Meal / Bone Block 10 health 3
Roasted Bone 20 health 5

Only Roasted Bone can befriend a Stampede. Each Roasted Bone fed to a wild Stampede has a 1 in 8 chance to tame it. A tamed Stampede will not despawn, and taming it within 8 blocks of a player grants that player a tame advancement. Taming does not change its hostility toward skeleton-tagged mobs.

Riding and saddling

A Stampede can be saddled with a saddle. It can be ridden by right-clicking it when it is not angry and when the player is not sneaking. A saddled Stampede can be unsaddled with shears, which returns the saddle.

A rider only steers the Stampede while holding a Skull on a Stick in either hand. Using the Skull on a Stick on the Stampede gives it a temporary speed boost of 0.2 movement speed for 40 ticks. While ridden, the rider's camera is pulled back to 1.7 times the normal distance, which gives a wider view of the path ahead.

Drops

The Stampede drops one to five Stridite when it dies, and its melee shedding can drop more during a fight. The loot table is listed below.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Stay out of the path of a moving Stampede. Its trampling knockback can throw a player off ledges or into lava.
  • A Stampede that runs out of hunger while ridden throws its rider off and turns on them. Feed it before a long ride to avoid this.
  • Carry Roasted Bone when exploring Soul Sand Valley. It is the only item that can befriend a Stampede, and each feeding has a 1 in 8 chance to tame it.
  • Use the Stampede's trampling to clear hostile mobs in a fight, since it damages everything in its path that is shorter than it.
