Apparition is a hostile flying mob added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. It is fire immune and belongs to the monster category. Its main threat is possession: an apparition can take over another mob, or a gargoyle statue, and turn it into one of the mod's other creatures. Apparitions are also hard to hit at range, because most projectiles pass through them. The main ways to deal with one are melee combat, silver weapons, thrown water, and salting or leashing it.

Spawning

Apparitions spawn naturally in Soul Sand Valley and in Black Ice Glaciers, a sub-biome of Soul Sand Valley. Natural spawning requires darkness, so apparitions appear only where the light level is low enough for hostile mobs, unless the spawn reason ignores light. They do not spawn on Peaceful difficulty. Each natural spawn places a single apparition on the ground. The spawn weight is 30 in both biomes.

Behavior

Movement and combat

An apparition has 24 health (12 hearts) and deals 4 melee damage (2 hearts). Its walking speed is 0.4 and its flying speed is 0.8. It takes no fall damage. It flies with a hovering movement controller. When it is idle, it chooses random points within about 8 blocks horizontally and 7 blocks vertically and drifts there, preferring air blocks. It follows players within 16 blocks.

Projectiles pass through apparitions and wisps, except piercing arrows. Arrows, shotgun pellets and similar projectiles therefore usually miss an apparition completely. Melee attacks are the reliable way to damage it.

Personalities and targets

When an apparition first loads, it is assigned one of four personalities at random. The personality decides which mobs it hunts and what it can possess:

  • Personality 1 hunts Bogged, Stray and skeletons, which it possesses into a Vessel. It also prefers the Ossified gargoyle statue, which turns into a Vessel.
  • Personality 2 does not pursue players on its own. It prefers the Trample gargoyle statue, which turns into a Stampede.
  • Personality 3 hunts slimes, which it possesses into an Ecto Slab. It prefers the Phase gargoyle statue, which also turns into an Ecto Slab.
  • Personality 4 hunts blazes and prefers the Ghoul gargoyle statue. Both turn into a Banshee.

Personalities 1, 3 and 4 also hunt piglins. Piglins are attacked but are not possessed. Personalities 1, 3 and 4 also pursue players. Personality 2 pursues players only after a player has attacked it.

Leashing

An apparition can be leashed. While it is leashed, a counter increases every tick. After 200 ticks (10 seconds), if it has a player as its target, it drops that target and makes heart particles. It then stops attacking players until it is unleashed, and the counter resets when the leash is removed.

Possession

An apparition that can possess uses one of two methods:

  1. Killing a target. When an apparition kills one of its target mobs that has a possession form, the victim is converted into that form and the apparition is removed. The victim keeps its custom name.
  2. Gargoyle statues. An apparition moves to a matching gargoyle statue within about 8 blocks, then converts into the possessed form when it reaches the statue. The statue is not used up.

An apparition can possess only when it is not salted and its possession cooldown is zero. After a possession, the cooldown is 300 ticks (15 seconds) by default. The cooldown counts down only while the apparition is not salted.

Possessed mobs ignore soul sand slowdown and count as undead. When a possessed mob dies, it may release an apparition. The chance depends on the possessed mob type: 25% for a Vessel, 15% for a Banshee, 5% for an Ecto Slab and 50% for a Stampede. On Hard difficulty these chances are multiplied by 2.0.

Salting and exorcism

Salting

An apparition can be salted by right-clicking it with Honeycomb, which uses one honeycomb and shows wax particles. A salted apparition cannot possess mobs or statues. Salting does not stop it from attacking. Gargoyle statues can also be salted, and apparitions ignore salted statues.

Water

Apparitions are sensitive to water. An apparition that is in water is exorcised: it is removed, with a sound and particles. A plain water potion (a water bottle with no added effects) thrown at an apparition also exorcises it. Because an exorcised apparition is removed rather than killed, it drops no loot and releases no wisps.

Silver

Silver weapons deal 1.8 times damage to apparitions and inflict Slowness V for 3 seconds. Silver armour deals 5 damage to an apparition that attacks its wearer in melee, and inflicts the same slowness. The silver weapon and armour tags come from the Caverns and Chasms necromium items.

Drops

An apparition drops 0 to 2 chain before Looting. Each level of Looting adds up to one more chain.

On death, an apparition releases 2 wisps by default. The wisps appear at the apparition's position. Exorcism does not release wisps.

Tips

  • A thrown water potion exorcises an apparition without a fight, and it leaves no drops. Water bottles are the cheapest way to deal with one that is hunting you, because the Nether has no rain.
  • A lead calms an apparition after 200 ticks, and it stops attacking players until it is unleashed. Use this to keep one away from you while you deal with other threats.
  • Salt an apparition with honeycomb before a fight near gargoyle statues or possessable mobs if you do not want it to take over a mob.
  • An apparition that kills a skeleton, stray or slime near you will possess it, so the mob you were fighting may become a Vessel or Ecto Slab. Keep the apparition away from other hostile mobs when you can.
  • Keep a melee weapon ready. Ranged weapons are unreliable against it, and silver weapons add damage.
