YUNG's Cave Biomes is an overworld content mod by YUNG that adds two underground biomes, Frosted Caves and Lost Caves, together with a set of cave blocks, two hostile mobs, a pair of status effects and a sandstorm system. It requires yungsapi, TerraBlender and GeckoLib. In Fear Nightfall it matters because its caves are one of the underground biome sets that the pack's custom biome table spreads across the land, and because both caves contain monsters that spawn only there.
Both biomes sit in the underground depth band of their climate zone, so they do not appear as surface biomes.
Overview
The mod adds content in four areas:
- Biomes. Frosted Caves is a cold underground biome of ice, icicles and frost. Lost Caves is a hot underground biome of ancient sandstone, prickly plants and sandstorms.
- Blocks. Ice variants, Ancient Sand, a family of Ancient Sandstone blocks, plain Brittle and Layered sandstone, and Prickly Peach Cactus with its vines.
- Mobs. The Ice Cube in Frosted Caves and the Sand Snapper in Lost Caves. Both are monsters and both spawn only in their own biome.
- Systems. The Frost and Buffeted status effects, Frost potions, Creeping Ice, falling icicles, sandstorms and two pottery sherds for decorated pots.
Its biomes are registered through TerraBlender in the overworld region. The mod also re-registers all vanilla overworld biomes in that region, with a changed Dripstone Caves climate point (see Changes to vanilla below).
Content
Biomes
- Frosted Caves is cold and icy. It has large and small icicles, icicle clusters, ice patches, ice sheets and frost lilies. Its monster list includes the Ice Cube, along with spiders, zombies, strays, skeletons, creepers, endermen and witches. Ores are the same as the vanilla underground set. The biome contains monster rooms and deep monster rooms.
- Lost Caves is hot and dry. It has brittle sandstone ceilings, sandstone with glow lichen, cacti, prickly peach cactus patches, prickly vines, dead bushes and layered sandstone pillars. Its springs are water and lava. It has monster rooms and deep monster rooms, and its spawn list includes the Sand Snapper.
See Biomes for how the pack's biome table handles these caves, and World Generation for the other underground biomes of the pack.
Blocks and items
- Ice. Frost Lily, Ice Sheet and Rare Ice covers the frost lily, Creeping Ice and Enchanted Ice. Icicles are also blocks in the cave biome. They drip water or lava into cauldrons and fall when unsupported.
- Sand and sandstone. Ancient Sand and Sandstone covers Ancient Sand, Suspicious Ancient Sand, and the Ancient Sandstone family. The family includes stairs, slabs, walls, cut, smooth, chiseled, layered and brittle variants. The non-ancient Brittle and Layered sandstone blocks are also part of the mod.
- Prickly plants. Prickly Peach Cactus and Prickly Vines. Prickly Peach is a food item from the cactus. Both plants hurt the player on contact.
- Pottery. Two new decorated pot sherds, hourglass and clock. They are found in archaeology loot, see Archaeology and Pottery Sherds.
- Trim. A smithing template for the new Ancient armor trim, made from diamond and Ancient Sandstone. See Armor Trims and Smithing and Gear Upgrades.
- Spawn eggs. Ice Cube and Sand Snapper spawn eggs.
Mobs
- Ice Cube is a hostile mob of Frosted Caves. It leaps at targets and attacks in melee. Each melee hit freezes the target. It is immune to freezing itself and takes no fall damage.
- Sand Snapper is a hostile mob of Lost Caves. It burrows into the ground, eats Prickly Peach Cactus and heals from it. After feeding it stays friendly for a while. It also carries and buries loot from archaeology tables. It is immune to cactus damage.
The mod's mobs are listed on Mobs. Both caves also spawn vanilla monsters.
Status effects and potions
- Frost is a harmful, instant effect that adds freeze ticks to the target. See Status Effects.
- Buffeted is a harmful effect that is applied during sandstorms. It halves movement speed.
- Frost and Strong Frost potions, with splash, lingering and tipped arrow variants. Brewing recipes are on Potions and Brewing.
Advancements
The mod adds eight advancements under the "YUNG's Cave Biomes" root, listed in the table at the end of this page. The full set of pack advancements is on Advancements.
Mechanics
Frost and freezing
Frost applies freeze ticks. The minimum is 200 times the amplifier plus one, and the cap is 600 times the amplifier plus one. Spectators and players on peaceful difficulty are not affected. Ice Cube hits add 200 freeze ticks.
Frost splash potions and tipped arrows with the Frost effect place Creeping Ice on impact. Frost places it within radius 3, and Strong Frost within radius 4. Only air, water and replaceable blocks are filled. Ultrawarm dimensions skip this effect for splash potions.
Creeping Ice and Enchanted Ice
- Creeping Ice is a thin, non-solid layer. It spreads slowly onto supporting faces and gives low light when it is next to an ore in the mod's glow list. Entities on Creeping Ice use ice friction.
- Enchanted Ice needs a stone tool and has a light level of 11. It drops nothing without Silk Touch and gives 15 to 54 experience instead. Breaking it earns the "Breaking the Ice" advancement.
Icicles
Icicles fall when they lose support, and the falling icicle deals damage that bypasses shields and damages helmets. Crossbows accept icicles as ammunition. The projectile deals base damage 1.5. Icicles also drip into cauldrons under them.
Prickly plants
- Prickly Vines are climbable. They deal 1.0 damage to an entity that moves through them at a speed of 0.003 blocks per tick or faster. Foxes, bees and Sand Snappers are exempt.
- Prickly Peach Cactus grows through its age stages and bears fruit. It deals 1.0 cactus damage to a player who touches it or interacts with it without holding an item. Sand Snappers ignore it.
- Prickly Peach restores 4 hunger points and 0.3 saturation. Eating it deals 1.0 cactus damage to the player.
Sandstorms
Each server level keeps its own sandstorm timer. A cooldown of 20 to 40 minutes (1200 to 2400 seconds) is followed by a storm of 2 to 10 minutes (120 to 600 seconds). Storms are on by default and their timings are set in the common config. During a storm, players in Lost Caves are given Buffeted every 10 ticks. Buffeted lasts 100 ticks, and it reduces movement speed by 50%. Clients also see sandstorm fog and particles, and a narrowed field of view from Buffeted. Sandstorms deal no direct damage.
Surviving a storm in Lost Caves earns the "Sandblasted Corridors" advancement. Operators can start or stop a storm with /sandstorm start and /sandstorm stop (permission level 2).
Brushing
Suspicious Ancient Sand is brushed with the vanilla brush. Each successful brush uses one point of durability from the brush.
Changes to vanilla
The mod changes several vanilla systems. Each change below is one the player will notice.
- Dripstone Caves. The Dripstone Caves climate point is moved, so Dripstone Caves no longer spawns in the frozen temperature band.
- Mineshafts and strongholds. Both structures can generate in Frosted Caves and Lost Caves.
- Lava aquifers. Inside Frosted Caves, lava aquifers are replaced with water. The lava level is kept.
- Skeletons. Skeletons in Frosted Caves are treated as standing in powder snow each tick.
- Ice. Ice and Enchanted Ice hide the faces they share with each other and with sturdy blocks. Creeping Ice gives ice friction to anything standing on it, in every dimension.
- Cauldrons. Cauldrons under an icicle tip collect the drip, in every dimension.
- Crossbows. All crossbows accept icicles as ammunition.
- Potions and arrows. Frost splash potions and Frost tipped arrows place Creeping Ice on impact.
- Tags. Ancient Sand counts as sand. The Ancient Sandstone blocks count as stairs, slabs, walls and sandstone. Prickly Vines count as climbable. Cave biomes count as underground, overworld and cave biomes for other mods.
- Decorated pots and trims. The two new sherds are added to the decorated pot sherd tag, and the new trim is added to the trim template tag.
- Compost. Prickly Peach, Prickly Vines and Prickly Peach Cactus are compostable.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack's custom biome table includes YUNG's caves as one of its biome sources. In each climate cell, every eligible biome shares the cell by weight, so Frosted Caves and Lost Caves appear in their underground climate bands. See Finding Structures and Biomes for where to look for caves in the pack.
Mineshafts and strongholds can generate in both caves. YUNG's witch huts are one of the types in the shared Witch Huts set, which the game picks from by biome, so they never stack on one spot.
The mod adds no chest loot of its own. The Ice Cube and Sand Snapper are hostile, so both caves are dangerous, and the pack's horror theme applies to them (see Horror and Spooky Content). For comparison, the pack's other ice threats include the Ice Spider and the Ice Spells from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.
