Armor Trims
Armor trims are patterns that a smithing table applies to armour, changing its texture without changing its protection or durability. Fear Nightfall adds several trim patterns and trim materials from its mods on top of the vanilla set. The patterns come from Jaden's Nether Expansion (Rift, Spirit and Valor), YUNG's Cave Biomes (Ancient), Supplementaries (Blast) and the vanilla templates that Terralith and Butchery place in their structures. The materials come from Biomes O' Plenty (Rose Quartz and Glowworm Silk) and Regions Unexplored (Prismarite Cluster). A player cares about trims because they are the main way to personalise armour, and because several of the templates are found only in a few hard-to-reach structures.
Armor trims are not the same as the Trims blocks added by Handcrafted. Those are furniture trim blocks, and they have no link to armour.
Applying a trim
A trim is applied at a smithing table with three items: a piece of trimmable armour in the base slot, a template in the template slot and a trim material in the addition slot. The base must belong to the minecraft:trimmable_armor tag, and the addition must belong to minecraft:trim_materials. The template is consumed, and the material is consumed as well. Each trim pattern has one texture for the chestplate, helmet and boots layer and a second texture for the leggings. Armour from some mods is removed from the trimmable tag, so it cannot be trimmed. School Armor Sets and the pieces of the Mutant Skeleton are examples.
Smithing is covered in more detail on Smithing and Gear Upgrades.

The three Jaden's templates and the Ancient template are described in full on their own pages, Armor Trims and Pottery Sherds and Lost Caves Relics. The Blast template has no loot source in the pack, so it is made only by crafting.
Blast
The Blast template is crafted in a shaped recipe. Seven diamonds, one cobblestone and one Blast template fill the grid, and the recipe yields two templates. A single template therefore gives a net gain of one, and a template cannot be made from nothing.
Trim materials
The vanilla trim materials work as usual. The pack adds these materials:
- Rose Quartz Chunk from Rose Quartz, which is found in the Crystalline Chasm and is made by breaking clusters.
- Glowworm Silk from Glowworm Silk and Glowing Moss, which hangs in the Glowing Grotto and can be collected with shears.
- Prismarite Cluster from Prismarite and Prismoss, which is a trim source in the Prismachasm biome.
Duplicating templates
All five of the pack's templates can be duplicated with a recipe. Each recipe is shown in the grid on the page for its template, and the rules are the same for all of them: the recipe takes one existing template and returns two, so it multiplies a template that has already been found but cannot create the first one.
- Rift, Spirit and Valor are crafted in a 3×3 grid with the template in the top centre square, the matching material in the centre square and diamonds in the other seven squares. The materials are Crying Obsidian for Rift, Soul Slate for Spirit and Pale Soul Slate for Valor. See Armor Trims and Pottery Sherds.
- Ancient is crafted from seven diamonds, one Ancient Armor Trim template and one Ancient Sandstone block. See Lost Caves Relics.
- Blast is crafted as described above.
Where to find templates
Most templates are found in chests and archaeology tables, and their chances are low. The pack's structures that hold them include:
- Nether structures. Moog's Nether Ruins and Moog's Nether Landmarks hold smithing templates in their treasure tables, and Nether Keep and Port holds a rib trim template.
- Surface and end structures. The treasure chests of End Mega Ships can hold armour trim templates. The Structory Towers end tower, the Nether fortress, the Wizard and the Pillager Lookout tops hold them too, and the Structory Temples and Landmarks have their own templates, such as a tide template in the Ocean Pillar and a rib template in the Warped Greatsword.
- Replacement structures. The replacement temples and strongholds, such as Better Stronghold and Better Desert Temple, have chests that were built without trims. The pack added them at vanilla-like odds. See Loot and Chests.
- End cities and ancient cities. Butchery adds Dragon and Warden smithing templates to end city and ancient city chests as global loot modifiers. See Carcasses and Corpses.
Pack changes
Fear Nightfall changed three things about trims. Trims were unobtainable in the replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds added by YUNG's, so the pack gave those chests trims at vanilla-like odds, and it extended the loot of Tide, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks and Traveler's Backpack to them. Jaden's Nether Expansion also adds the Rift template to ruined portal chests with a loot modifier. The full list of pack changes is on Changes to Vanilla, and the loot changes are on Loot and Chests.
Tips
- Search several chests and archaeology tables before deciding that a template is missing. Most rolls return nothing.
- Templates stack to 64, so a spare stock is easy to carry.
