The Sand Snapper is a hostile burrowing mob added by YUNG's Cave Biomes. It lives only in the Lost Caves biome, where it moves over sand and sand-like blocks, digs underground to hide, and can be made friendly with Prickly Peach fruit. It is in the monster category, but its AI has no melee or targeting goals, so it does not pursue or strike players. The threat is its unpredictability rather than its damage. It is invulnerable while buried, so a player who wants to fight one has to wait for it to surface.

Spawning

Sand Snappers spawn only in Lost Caves, an underground biome in the hot climate band that lies in the cave depth layer. In Lost Caves the Snapper has a spawn weight of 50 and spawns in groups of 1 to 2. That is about 10.6% of the biome's monster spawn weight, which totals 470. Its competitors there are spiders, husks, skeletons and creepers (100 each), endermen (10), and zombie villagers and witches (5 each). A cave with many husks or skeletons will often have few Snappers.

The mob uses the vanilla mob spawn-placement check for ground spawns.

Its spawn egg is Sand Snapper Spawn Egg. The egg stacks to 64.

Behavior

Burrowing

A Sand Snapper prefers to walk on the blocks in the mod's sand snapper block tag. When the ground allows, it submerges into the ground. The dig-down animation lasts 37 ticks, the dig-up animation 34 ticks, and a dive lasts 15 ticks. A submerged Snapper is invulnerable to every source except those that bypass invulnerability and creative-mode players.

A submerged Snapper resurfaces through its emerge goal. This goal only runs when no player is within 8 blocks of the Snapper, or within 2 blocks while a sandstorm is active. It also requires that no air blocks lie in the ground directly beneath it, and it has a 100-tick cooldown between uses. While a player is within 32 blocks, the Snapper turns its head to look at the nearest player.

Fleeing

An unfriendly Snapper runs from players. When a player comes within 8 blocks, it moves away at speed 1.25, or at speed 2.0 while submerged. The flee goal does not run while it is friendly, or while a sandstorm is active. Sandstorms are a Lost Caves feature.

Feeding and friendship

Right-clicking a Sand Snapper with a Prickly Peach feeds it, if it is not submerged, digging, or carrying an item. Feeding heals it 4 health (2 hearts), makes it friendly to players for 3600 ticks (3 minutes), and starts a 1200-tick (1 minute) cooldown before it can be fed again. While friendly, the Snapper does not flee from players. Each feeding also makes it dig for a gift (see the Drops section below).

A Snapper approaches a player who holds a Prickly Peach in either hand, if the player is within 10 blocks. It stays about 2.5 blocks away. Loose Prickly Peach items lying on the ground within 16 blocks horizontally and 4 blocks vertically are eaten by the Snapper.

Prickly Peach Cactus

Sand Snappers eat the fruit of Prickly Peach Cactus plants. They are immune to cactus damage, so the plant does not hurt them. After eating a fruit, the Snapper has a cooldown of 6000 ticks (5 minutes) before it eats from the cactus again. If the eating is interrupted, the cooldown is only 200 ticks.

Carrying items

Right-clicking a Sand Snapper with any item other than a Prickly Peach makes it pick up one copy of that item. The Snapper then digs and buries the item nearby. A Snapper that dies while carrying an item drops the item.

Drops

A Sand Snapper has no ordinary loot. The only item it drops on death is the item it is carrying, if any.

Its useful loot comes from the gift it digs up after being fed. The gift table has six entries of equal weight, and each gift gives one item:

Each of the six items has a 1 in 6 chance. Each feeding produces one gift, and the Snapper cannot be fed again for 1200 ticks.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Stand more than 8 blocks away from a buried Snapper so that it can resurface. It stays under while a player is closer, and it cannot be hurt while submerged.
  • Keep Prickly Peaches in your inventory when you go into a Lost Caves cave. Holding one within 10 blocks of a Snapper draws it toward you.
  • Right-clicking a Snapper with an item other than a Prickly Peach makes it take that item and bury it. Avoid doing this with items you want back.
  • Expect fewer Snappers in caves crowded with husks and skeletons, since those mobs share the same spawn space.
  • Watch for sandstorms in Lost Caves. A Snapper stops fleeing during a sandstorm and can surface when a player is only 2 blocks away.
