Sleepy Hollows is a content mod for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, version 1.1.1. It adds one overworld biome, the Sleepy Hollows, along with a graveyard structure, a hollow wood set, gravestone stone blocks, a hostile Infected Zombie, a boss called the Headless Horseman and a flying miniboss, the Fleeing Pumpkin Head. It also adds a survival meter called Sanity that drains players who spend time in the biome. It is one of the pack's main horror systems.

The mod's content is thematic rather than a broad content expansion. Almost everything it adds is tied to one biome, and the Sanity meter is the only mechanic that reaches outside it.

Overview

Sleepy Hollows is a Biolith sub-biome. It takes a share of five vanilla forest and taiga biomes (Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Dark Forest and Forest), so the biome appears wherever those forests are, rather than in a single generated place. It adds a full wood set and gravestone stone family, plants, one village-like structure, two hostile mobs, a rideable spectral horse, a four-piece armor set, a boss and a ritual to summon it.

In Fear Nightfall the mod is one of the pack's horror sources. The biome is weighted 6×, and the mod's structures are placed closer together than in the unmodified mod. See the In Fear Nightfall section below for the details.

Content

The mod's content falls into a few groups. Each group links to the wiki page that covers it in depth.

Biome and structure

  • The Sleepy Hollows biome has its own grass, foliage, fog and water colours, and it replaces the current music while the player is inside. Its trees, gravestones, tombstones and flowers are listed on the biome page.
  • The Sleepy Hollows Cemetery is the biome's only structure. It is a walled burial ground that generates only in the biome, and its starting piece is a Pedestal, the block that starts the Headless Horseman ritual.

Blocks

Items

  • Luminous Water is the mod's main sanity food and its splash form cures infection. Its ingredients and recipes are on its own page.
  • The Spectral Waraxe and Shatterbrand are the mod's weapons. The Shatterbrand applies the Infected effect, and the Spectral War Axe makes its target glow.
  • The Hauntbound Armor set is the main protection against the biome's sanity drain.
  • Miscellaneous items, including Spectral Essence, Luminous Essence, the Loot Bag, the Reins of the Spectral Horse, Candy Corn, Dusk Berries and Spectral Pumpkin Pie, are on Sleepy Hollows Miscellaneous. The mod's Music Disc is listed under Music Discs.

Mobs

  • The Infected Zombie is the biome's common hostile mob. It is a zombie subclass that carries an iron sword and can be found at any time of day.
  • The Fleeing Pumpkin Head is a flying miniboss. It appears only when the Headless Horseman's head detaches during the boss fight.
  • The Headless Horseman is the boss. It is summoned by a ritual at a Pedestal and drops the Reins of the Spectral Horse.
  • The Spectral Horse is a rideable mount that the Reins summon. It is the Horseman's guaranteed drop.
  • Skeletons and zombies that the mod renames and equips, such as the Hauntbound Guardian and the Hauntbound Aggressor, are covered on the pages for the boss and the miniboss.

Effects

The four status effects are covered on Sleepy Hollows Effects: Insanity, Infected, Mental Fortitude and Was It All Just a Bad Dream?.

Mechanics

The mod's main system is the Sanity meter. It is a value from 0 to 100 that is stored on each player. Players outside the biome recover it, and players inside the biome lose it, faster at night. Sanity food restores it, and worn Hauntbound pieces reduce each point of loss. Reaching zero applies the Insanity effect. The full rules are on the Sanity page.

Its related systems are:

  • Ritual summon. The Headless Horseman is summoned by right-clicking a Pedestal with Luminous Essence. The ritual takes 150 ticks and is blocked if a Horseman already exists within 64 blocks of the Pedestal.
  • Infection. The Infected effect deals damage over time and drains sanity. It is applied by standing on infected flowers and by hitting targets with the Shatterbrand. It is cured by Splash Luminous Water.
  • Mental Fortitude. This effect protects against sanity loss. The full Hauntbound set grants it, and so does the Completionist Banner.
  • Tombstones. At night, a tombstone near a player can activate. Using a Spectral Essence on an active tombstone spawns up to three Hauntbound Guardians.
  • Creaking. Hollow Planks creak at random, more often at night. An axe cleans them and stops the creaking within 32 blocks.

The mod's creative tab is named Sleepy Hollows, with Building and Adventure sub-tabs.

Changes to vanilla

The mod changes several parts of the base game, and the player will notice most of them in the biome.

  • Sanity applies everywhere. The meter applies to all survival players in any dimension. A player who is outside the biome gains sanity, so the meter is not limited to players who visit the biome.
  • Insanity can teleport players. Insanity applies a Bad Dream effect, which at its end teleports the player to their respawn bed, or to world spawn if the bed is missing.
  • The Headless Horseman changes terrain. Every seventh melee hit converts water and lava sources in a 21 × 21 × 21 cube around it into Gravestone blocks.
  • Infected flowers affect players. Standing on or in an infected flower applies the Infected effect.
  • Raubbau forces Efficiency VIII on its holder's item during each inventory tick.
  • The Spectral War Axe applies Glowing to its target for 120 ticks, and its damage ignores half of the target's armor.
  • Tombstone deactivation hurts the player. Attacking an active tombstone deals 5 magic damage to the attacker.
  • Vanilla spawns are extended. The biome adds Witch, Bat and Glow Squid spawns on top of the mod's own mobs.
  • Vanilla tags are extended. Logs, planks, leaves, saplings, walls, flowers, axes and swords now include the mod's blocks and items.
  • Hollow logs can be stripped with an axe, and Hollow Planks, slabs, stairs, fences and logs are flammable.
  • Composters accept 13 mod items, at chances between 10% and 50%.
  • Creepers can drop the mod's Music Disc when they are killed by a skeleton.

In Fear Nightfall

The mod was adjusted for the pack's horror theme. These changes are listed in the pack's change notes.

  • Biome weight. The Sleepy Hollows biome has 6× weight in the pack's biome set, so it is one of the most common horror biomes in forests and taigas.
  • Structure spacing. The Sleepy Hollows Cemetery is one of the horror structures placed about 30% closer together, and where it shares a structure set with other structures it has 6× weight.
  • Rarity fixed. The biome was very rare in the unmodified pack, with the nearest one about 2.6 km away. It was made more common.
  • Spawn modifiers. Born in Chaos's spawn modifiers were limited to the Overworld. Sleepy Hollows is one of the Overworld biomes kept in that set, along with Willow Swamp.
  • Boss immunity. The Headless Horseman is immune to the Tide Pocket Watch's freezing effect, along with the other bosses in the pack's boss tag.
  • Loot tables. The mod's own loot tables are unchanged. Its structures do not receive the pack's extra loot from other mods, so the cemetery's chests hold the mod's loot only.
  • Shared containers. The cemetery's coffins are not per-player. Lootr cannot make them so, and they are first come, first served.

Note: Generation changes only apply to newly generated chunks. A fresh world is needed to see the full effect of the pack's placement changes.
