The Nether

From the Fear Nightfall wiki · Fear Nightfall

The Nether is the lower dimension of Fear Nightfall, and it is the most heavily modded part of the pack. Vanilla supplies its terrain rules and the basic Nether biomes, but most of the Nether's surface is now taken by Biomes O' Plenty, whose five Nether biomes displace most of the vanilla non-wastes space. Around them, Jaden's Nether Expansion overhauls the dimension's mobs, plants, blocks and weapons, Hearths adds terrain and towers, and a set of structure mods places fortresses, camps, ruins and temples across the dimension.

The Nether is a place to prepare for rather than a place to pass through quickly. Most of its biomes are hostile, several mobs are fire-immune, and a few terrain features damage anyone who stands in them. The sections below list what changes the Nether from vanilla, and the pages linked from each section give the full detail.

Biomes

The Nether has more named biomes than the vanilla dimension. The main ones are:

  • Biomes O' Plenty: Crystalline Chasm, Erupting Inferno, Undergrowth, Visceral Heap and Withered Abyss. The Crystalline Chasm is the place to find Rose Quartz. The Erupting Inferno is full of lava and ghasts, and the Visceral Heap spawns zombified piglins and ghasts in groups of four, which makes it one of the most dangerous Nether biomes to cross. The Withered Abyss is populated by endermen and wither skeletons rather than the piglins and hoglins of the vanilla Nether. Undergrowth is a hot forest of Hellbark Wood trees. The mod's Nether regions take over the vanilla Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest and Basalt Deltas slots, so most of the vanilla non-wastes space is now one of these biomes.
  • Regions Unexplored: Infernal Holt, a part of the vanilla Basalt Deltas biome with blackstone ground, brimwood trees and dorcel flowers that damage anything standing in them. The Blackstone Basin is a dark, dry variant of the Nether that has its own mob mix.
  • Jaden's Nether Expansion: adds the Soul Sand Valley ghostly mobs, the Crimson and Warped forest plants and fungi, and the Chapel and Sanctum structures. Its mobs and plants are listed in the sections below.
  • Hearths: the nether wastes, crimson forest and warped forest receive natural terrain, giant fungi and rock formations.

The biome pages list each biome's spawns, fog and terrain. Biomes describes how the pack chooses biomes in general.

Mobs

Most of the Nether's hostile population comes from the vanilla dimension and from the biome spawn lists above. The additions are:

  • Jaden's Nether Expansion adds six hostile or semi-hostile mobs: the Ecto Slab, the Vessel, the Banshee, the Apparition, the Stampede and the Carcass (Nether). Most of them are fire-immune. The Vessel fires shotgun volleys at players within 16 blocks. The Banshee teleports and fires Will O' Wisps. The Apparition can possess other mobs and Gargoyle Statues. The Stampede tramples everything in its path, but a tamed or saddled one is a fast mount. The Carcass is dormant until it is revived, and then it guards its area. The Wisp itself is passive and never attacks.
  • Golem Overhaul adds the Netherite Golem, which is built by hand, is fire-immune and can be ridden.
  • Dungeons and Taverns places skeleton-held towers and camps, piglin outposts, and underground keeps and ports. These are described on Nether Skeleton Towers and Camps, Piglin Outposts and Nether Keep and Port.

The Infernal Spirit has no natural spawns, and Born in Chaos's mobs do not spawn in the Nether at all (see Pack changes below).

Structures

The Nether's structures come from several mods, and each mod places its own sets:

Each structure page gives the placement values and the loot in the game. Nether structures are spaced out by the pack's Sparse Structures setting, so several of the rarer ones, such as the Devil's Misfortune and the Piglin Outposts, were not found in a survey of Nether terrain.

Blocks, plants and resources

Light sources and metal blocks are described on Treacherous Flame and Netherite Plating and Grates. Nether Expansion Effects and Enchantments covers the Soul Speed effect and the shotgun enchantments.

Pack changes

Fear Nightfall changes the Nether in four ways that the pages above do not repeat:

  • Born in Chaos spawns are limited to the Overworld. Its mobs made up 98% of End spawns before the pack's fix, and the Nether no longer receives them.
  • Structure density is set by Sparse Structures. Non-horror structures across the pack, Nether ones included, spawn at about a third of the density the mods use by default. Horror structures are placed closer together. Structure pages quote the in-game spacing.
  • Nether Expansion loot reaches the mapped chests, and its brazier chests are shared containers, not per-player ones.
  • Five Nether Expansion recipes for items that do not exist are disabled, and one broken advancement parent is fixed.

Tips

  • Bring fire resistance and Antidotes before crossing the Biomes O' Plenty Nether biomes. Many of the Jaden mobs are fire-immune, so fire damage is not the only threat.
  • Cross the Visceral Heap and the Erupting Inferno quickly, and avoid fighting groups of ghasts and zombified piglins in the open.
  • Stay out of dorcel flowers in the Infernal Holt. They damage anything that stands in them.
  • A Sanctum Compass points to the nearest Chapel and Sanctum. The compass has no crafting recipe, so it must be found.
  • The Pump-Charge Shotgun is the top tier of the Jaden shotgun line, made by upgrading a Shotgun-Fist.
  • Wisps are harmless and can be bottled. They are used to craft the Will O' Wisp projectiles that Banshees fire.
  • The Stampede can be tamed and saddled. A tame one makes a fast way across the open Nether.
