The Dragon Scale is a crafting material added by Butchery. It is the base material of the Dragon Scale armor set, which the mod ranks as its top-tier armor. Dragon Scales come from cutting up the Ender Dragon carcass that the mod creates when the Ender Dragon dies. They are combined into Dragon Scale Ingots, which are used with Netherite to make the armor, and into Dragon Scale Blocks for decoration.

Obtaining

Dragon Scales are not found in chests or on natural terrain. Their only source is the Ender Dragon carcass. When the Ender Dragon dies, Butchery replaces its normal drop sequence with a Dragon mob. Under the default config (Only Cleavers Drop Carcasses on) this happens only when the killer holds a cleaver or has Butcher's Touch or Hunter on the held weapon. With that option off, every kill drops it. The Dragon mob has 10 health, does not spawn naturally, and is removed as soon as there is a non-air block below it. It then becomes an Ender Dragon Carcass block.

The carcass is cut up with a boss tool in the main hand. The Netherite Cleaver is one of the boss tools. Each of the carcass's fifteen cut-up stages rolls its own loot table, so a full cut-up yields a set of dragon meat, dragon bones and dragon scales. Crafting

Dragon Scales are not crafted. They are used as an ingredient in the recipes below. The Dragon Scale Ingot is made from 4 Dragon Scales and 4 Netherite Ingots in a crafting grid, and nine ingots make a Dragon Scale Block. The Dragon Scale Block can be crafted back into nine ingots. The Dragon Smithing Template is made from Spiked Dragon Bone, a Dragon Smithing Template, Dragon Scales and a Dragon Scale Block, producing two templates.

Each of the fifteen cut-up stages of the Ender Dragon carcass has one pool that can drop a Dragon Scale. The pool gives a dragon scale with a weight of 15 out of 100, so each stage has a 15% chance to yield one scale. The pool also has an enchantment bonus function, so an enchantment on the cutting tool can increase the number of scales dropped. A full cut-up without bonuses therefore averages about 2.25 Dragon Scales (15 stages at 15% each). Other loot is raw dragon meat in every stage and dragon bones in some stages.

The Dragon Smithing Template is the only other dragon-related item that appears in loot. It is not a Dragon Scale, but it is required for every Dragon Scale armor piece. It appears in the End city and End Castle chest loot listed above.

Usage

The Dragon Scale itself has no use except as a crafting ingredient. It is consumed by the recipes below, which lead to the Dragon Scale Ingot, the Dragon Scale Block and the Dragon Smithing Template.

Dragon Scale Ingot

The Dragon Scale Ingot is the smithing addition for Dragon Scale armor. Each armor piece is made at a Smithing Table by combining a Dragon Smithing Template, the matching Netherite armor piece and one Dragon Scale Ingot. The Dragon Smithing Template is used up in the process.

Dragon Scale Block

The Dragon Scale Block is a decorative block with a hardness of 1 and a blast resistance of 10. It can be mined with any tool. It has four facing states, one for each horizontal direction. The block is mainly used as a building material and as one of the ingredients for the Dragon Smithing Template.

Dragon Scale armor

Dragon Scale armor is a four-piece set. Each piece is fire resistant, has a durability above the matching Netherite piece and has the same enchantability of 22. The set grants a toughness of 4.0 and a knockback resistance of 0.2. Its defense values are 6 for the helmet, 11 for the chestplate, 8 for the leggings and 6 for the boots. Items

The Dragon Scale is a stackable item with a stack size of 64. Dragon Scale Ingots, Dragon Scale Blocks and the Dragon Scale armor set are all made from it, directly or through the ingot.
