Farming and Crops

From the Fear Nightfall wiki · Fear Nightfall

Farming and Crops covers the crops, herbs, plants and soils that the pack's mods add to the vanilla farming loop. The main sources are Farmer's Delight (cabbage, tomato, onion and rice, plus soil upgrades), Hexerei (the herbs used in alchemy), Supplementaries (flax), Jaden's Nether Expansion (cerebrage and sorrowsquash) and Regions Unexplored (duskmelon and the peat and silt farmland). Butchery adds salt, which is a mineral rather than a crop but is produced outdoors in a similar way.

The pack also adds helpers that work the fields: crows that harvest nearby crops, Hay Golems that protect farmland from trampling, and the Worm Farm, which turns compostable items into bait. The detail for each crop lives on its own page, and this page shows how the pieces fit together.

Crops

Soil and growth

Organic Compost and Rich Soil are the pack's main soil upgrade. Organic Compost takes eight stages to become Rich Soil, and its progress is faster in light, next to water and next to compost activators. Rich Soil boosts the crop above it with a 20% chance per random tick at the default config value. Rich Soil can also be tilled into Rich Soil Farmland, which works like ordinary farmland. See Rich Soil and Organic Compost for the full rules.

Peat and Silt adds two families of farmland blocks. Peat farmland and silt farmland support crops without the vanilla farmland requirement, so crops can be planted on them directly.

Flax and mandrake grow only at a light level of 9 or higher. Mushroom Colonies grow on compost and on Rich Soil, and a fully mature colony requires Rich Soil.

Wild growth and biomes

Wild crop patches generate according to biome temperature and humidity. Wild carrots and onions grow in temperate biomes, wild potatoes in cold biomes, wild tomatoes in hot biomes that are not wet, and wild rice in wet biomes. Wild cabbage grows on beaches. Flax generates in roughly one chunk in seven, only where water touches the plant's base.

Other pack mods add plants that are not crops but can be harvested or composted. These include Biomes O' Plenty Plants, Regions Unexplored Plants, Bioshrooms, Hyacinth Plants, Nether Expansion Plants and Fungi, Sleepy Hollows Plants and Mycotoxic Plants. The Mycotoxic plants grow in the Mycotoxic Undergrowth biome. The Sorroweed that sorrowsquash needs grows in the Sorrowsquash Pasture, a sub-biome of Soul Sand Valley. Soul Sand Valley is also home to several of the pack's horror mobs, including the Apparition, so fields there carry extra risk.

Villagers and trade

Farmer's Delight adds its crops to the items that villagers want, which affects breeding. Novice farmers buy 26 onions and 26 tomatoes for one emerald each. Apprentice farmers buy 16 cabbages and 20 rice for one emerald each. The Wandering Trader sells cabbage seeds, tomato seeds, rice and onion for one emerald each. Farmer villagers at Journeyman level sell flax seeds, as described on the Flax page.

In village farms, wheat in the farm processor lists has a 30% chance to become a Farmer's Delight crop. Potatoes in snowy farms have a 20% chance to become cabbage or onion.

Automation

Tamed crows are commanded with the Crow Flute. In Harvest mode a crow breaks crops and crop-like plants within 24 blocks. Its whitelist sets which blocks it will harvest. If the whitelist is empty, it harvests every block with the crow_harvestable tag, which includes Hexerei herbs. Harvest crows deposit what they collect into nearby Coffers and Herb Jars, so a field close to a container keeps the harvest in one place.

Hay Golems from Golem Overhaul protect farmland. Farmland cannot be trampled within 10 blocks of a Hay Golem, and this applies to any entity, so a golem placed in the middle of a field keeps the whole field intact.

The Worm Farm from Aquaculture is a composter-style block that turns compostable items into worms, the bait used on fishing rods. It has eight fill levels. A hopper placed below a full farm takes its single worm and resets the farm to empty in one step.

Salt

Salt (Butchery) is made in the open. A salt basin checks its state every 1000 ticks. Each check adds salt if it is daytime, the basin can see the sky, and it is not raining. A full cycle of six stages produces six salt by default. Salt is one of the early chemistry inputs in the pack.

Farming at night

The pack's horror biomes and structures are dangerous at night, and food is one way to get through a long night. Farmer's Delight adds Nourishment, which lets a player go several minutes without hunger drain. The duration of each meal's effect is listed on Comfort and Nourishment. The Sage Burning Plate, a Hexerei block made from dried sage, vetoes natural spawns of hostile monsters within 48 blocks by default. See Hexerei Witchcraft for the details.

Fear Nightfall changes

  • Farmer's Delight loot is added to 14 vanilla chest tables, including abandoned mineshafts, village houses, pillager outposts and simple dungeons. Farmer's Delight items also reach the chests of Dungeons and Taverns through the pack's loot mapping. See Loot and Chests.
  • Lootr cannot make Cabinets or Hexerei chests per-player, so their contents are shared and first come, first served.
  • Hexerei covens and witch huts are placed about 30% closer together than in the original mod. Where they share a set with other structures they get six times the weight. See Covens and Hexerei Witch Hut.
  • The Hexerei Sunshine candle has its recipe disabled, because its effect permanently cleared weather. See Hexerei Witchcraft.

Tips

  • Break grass with your bare hand or a non-silk-touch tool to have a chance at Sage Seeds. Shears and silk touch never give them.
  • Set a crow's whitelist before sending it to harvest. An empty whitelist makes it harvest every tagged crop on the farm.
  • Place Rich Soil under the crop you want to speed up. It boosts only the crop directly above or below it.
  • Flax and mandrake will not grow in the dark, so light a field with lamps or light blocks before planting.
