Gamerules and Commands
The Gamerules and Commands are the switches and operator commands that the mods in Fear Nightfall add on top of the vanilla /gamerule and /locate commands. Most of them come from Born in Chaos, which registers about 52 gamerules, and from The Hordes, Corpse, Accessories and Curios and Carry On, which add their own commands. A server owner uses them to turn content on or off, to force holiday events, and to run the death and horde tools. A player meets them mainly through their effects: a corpse left at the place of death, a horde that arrives at night, or a seasonal helmet on a zombie.
The pack reapplies some of these rules on every datapack load, and that is noted below where it matters.
Born in Chaos gamerules
Born in Chaos uses gamerules instead of a config file. The event gamerules control the mod's content, and each mob has a spawn toggle.
| Gamerule | Default | Controls |
|---|---|---|
seasonalEvents |
on | Runs the date-based holiday events. See Seasonal Events. |
halloweenEvent, chillingHorrorEvent, chaoticSpringEvent |
off | Forces one holiday event on all year. |
naughtinessMechanics |
on, forced off by the pack | The hidden naughtiness score and the Krampus punishment. See Naughtiness and Krampus. |
maggotsAppearance |
on | Zombie-type deaths can summon a Corpse Maggot. See Maggot and Corpse Fly. |
generationofInfectedDiamonds |
on | Generation of the infected diamond ores. |
zombieClownSpawn |
on | Natural spawning of Zombie Clowns. |
soulStratificationEffect, disappearanceofSpiritsUndertheSun, zombiesinaBarrelSpawn |
on | Further rules in the mod's registry, listed here for completeness. |
Almost every Born in Chaos mob also has a ...Spawn gamerule that is on by default. Setting it to false stops natural spawning of that mob and leaves other mobs alone. Examples are babySkeletonSpawn (Baby Skeleton), decrepitSkeletonSpawn (Decrepit Skeleton), doorKnightSpawn (Door Knight), dreadHoundSpawn (Dread Hound), boneImpSpawn (Bone Imp), lifestealerSpawn (Lifestealer) and krampusSpawn (Krampus). The spawn rules are read on each natural spawn attempt. A Bone Imp made by an elixir, a spawn egg or a summon is not affected by boneImpSpawn.
Fear Nightfall sets naughtinessMechanics to false every time the datapack loads. The score therefore never rises, no Krampus punishment fires, and Krampus appears only from its ordinary spawn rules. The reasons are given in Changes to Vanilla.
Accessories and Curios
The Accessories framework adds one gamerule, accessories:keepAccessoryInventory, which is off by default. When it or the vanilla keepInventory rule is on, equipped accessories are kept on death. Otherwise they drop, unless the item has the prevent_equipment_drop enchantment effect, in which case it is destroyed. Curios has no gamerule of its own. In this pack its keepCurios setting follows the server's keepInventory rule, so the Accessories gamerule stays at its default. The details are on Accessories and Curios.
Death-related rules
Vanilla keepInventory is the usual switch for what a player keeps when they die. Corpse stores a player's inventory in a corpse entity at the place of death, and the page on that mod covers how the corpse is recovered. The Hordes changes what happens to a player who dies while infected: a player zombie is created. The zombiePlayersStoreItems setting decides whether that zombie keeps the dead player's items. The pack sets it to false, so the zombie copy spawns without them. The general rules are on Death and Respawning.
Other mods' gamerules
- Mutant Monsters reads the vanilla
doMobLoot,doEntityDrops, showDeathMessagesandmobGriefingrules and adds none of its own. See Mutant Monsters. - Snow Real Magic adds two gamerules,
snowrealmagic:blizzardStrength(default 0, which is off) andsnowrealmagic:blizzardFrequency(default 10000). The mod labels them a joke feature. - Carry On follows
keepInventoryfor a carried object. See Carry On.
Commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/deathhistory <player|uuid> |
Opens another player's death history. It is an operator command (permission level 2). See Corpse. |
/hordes start <ticks>, stop, reset [player] |
Starts or ends a horde event, or resets the horde schedule. See Horde Nights. |
/hordes spawnWave <count>, spawnZombie <player> <pos> <type>, listEntities, debug |
Spawns a wave or a single zombie, lists horde mobs and writes the horde log. See Horde Nights and Player Zombies. |
/accessories |
Lists and edits accessory slots, groups and entity bindings. See Accessories and Curios. |
/curios |
Adds, removes, locks, unlocks or drops the contents of curio slots. See Accessories and Curios. |
/carryon debug, /carryon clear, /carryon place |
debug is open to any player. clear works on yourself for any player and on a target for operators. place is for operators and places the carried object at the player's position. See Carry On. |
/locate structure <id>, /locate biome <id> |
Finds the nearest structure or biome with the given id. See Finding Structures and Biomes. |
/gamerule <name> <value> |
Sets any gamerule above, for example /gamerule boneImpSpawn false. |
The /hordes subcommands are for testing. Natural horde nights run whether or not they are used.
Locating modded structures
The vanilla /locate command finds the pack's modded structures by their mod id, and each structure page lists its id. Some vanilla ids are blocked on purpose, because the mod that replaces the vanilla structure places its own version instead:
/locate structure minecraft:desert_pyramidfails. Usebetterdeserttemples:desert_temple. See Better Desert Temple./locate structure minecraft:fortressfails. Usebetterfortresses:fortress. See Better Nether Fortress./locate structure minecraft:strongholdreturns an error. Usebetterstrongholds:stronghold. See Better Stronghold./locate structure mineshaftis blocked. Use#bettermineshafts:better_mineshafts. See Better Mineshafts./locate structure minecraft:monumentfails. Usebetteroceanmonuments:ocean_monument. See Better Ocean Monument.
Villages from ChoiceTheorem's Overhauled Village also appear in /locate structure minecraft:village, because the mod adds them to the vanilla village tag.
Server settings that affect commands
The max-tick-time property is set to -1 in server.properties. Without this, a /locate biome search for a rare biome can run past the server's 60-second watchdog and stop the server. With the watchdog off, the same search takes about 14 seconds. The change is explained in Changes to Vanilla, and the biome search times are covered in Finding Structures and Biomes.
The Hordes configuration is also tuned by the pack. The world keeps ticking when no player is online, so time, weather and mob behaviour continue on an empty server. The horde schedule and wave sizes are on Horde Nights, and the infection rules are on Zombie Infection.
Tips
- Set
seasonalEventstofalseto stop the holiday equipment on zombies and skeletons. Set one of the forced event gamerules totrueto keep that event active all year. - Use the mod id with
/locate structurefor any structure that a replacement mod provides, because the vanilla id may be blocked. - Check the server clock before a holiday. Event windows follow the system date, so a server with the wrong date runs the wrong events.
