Player Zombies are hostile mobs added by The Hordes. Each one is a copy of a dead player: it wears the player's skin, name and armour, and it carries a cape when the player had one. There are three kinds: the zombie player, the husk player and the drowned player. A player zombie is created when a player dies while infected by infection, so the mob is the player's final state rather than a separate spawn. Players who die of infection in the Fear Nightfall pack therefore leave behind a hostile copy of themselves at the place of death, and the copy is as dangerous as the infected mobs that caused the death.

Spawning

Player zombies have no natural spawns. No biome, structure or horde spawn table places them. They appear in one of three ways:

  • Infection death. An infected player who dies creates a player zombie at the death position. This requires the infection system to be enabled and infectionSpawnsZombiePlayers to be on, which is the default and the pack setting. The player zombie is created when the player dies. Infection kills the player when its final stage ends, and the zombie is created at that moment.
  • Grave mode. The zombieGraves option makes every player death create a player zombie, whether or not the player was infected. It is off in the Fear Nightfall pack, so only infected deaths create them here.
  • Commands. Server operators can spawn one with /hordes spawnZombie <player> <pos> <type>, where the type selects the zombie, husk or drowned variant.

No player zombie is created when the player dies on Peaceful difficulty.

The variant depends on where the player died:

  • A player who dies underwater creates a drowned player, if drownedPlayers is on (the pack default).
  • A player who dies in a biome in the hordes:husk_player_spawn_biomes tag creates a husk player, if huskPlayers is on (the pack default). The tag covers desert, savanna and badlands biomes. The underwater check runs first, so a player who dies underwater in one of these biomes becomes a drowned player.
  • Any other death creates a zombie player.

The Horde Nights spawn table uses vanilla zombies, husks and drowned, not player zombies. A horde night can therefore produce ordinary undead, while a player zombie comes only from a player's death.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

A player zombie uses the same goals as the vanilla mob it is built on, with the stats listed in the table below. It has 20 health (10 hearts), 3 attack damage, 2 armour, a movement speed of 0.23 and a follow range of 35 blocks. It attacks players and other living mobs as a normal hostile mob does, and it targets any player or infectable mob that comes within range, the same way infected mobs do.

Its attacks spread infection. A player zombie has an infectivity of 0.75, the husk player 0.8 and the drowned player 0.7. Each hit that connects infects the victim with a probability of that value multiplied by 1 - infection_resistance. A player starts with a resistance of 0.25, and worn armour adds to it. Against an unarmoured player, a zombie player's hit therefore infects with a chance of about 56 per cent (0.75 × 0.75). Armour lowers the chance on every hit. Infection then follows the normal course described on Zombie Infection.

Player zombies are not burned by daylight. The pack sets zombiesBurn to true, so ordinary zombies and husks burn in sunlight, but player zombies are exempt: zombiePlayersBurn is false and the check for all three variants reads that setting. They are not fire-immune, and they can be hurt by any source, because zombiePlayersOnlyHurtByPlayers is off.

Changing environment changes the variant. A player zombie that ends up underwater converts into a drowned player. A husk player that ends up underwater converts back into a zombie player. In both cases the copy keeps the player's skin, name and equipment.

Because the pack's zombiePlayersStoreItems option is off, a player zombie holds no inventory. The player's drops are not moved into the zombie. They are left to fall where the player died, or to the Corpse mod's grave when that mod is in use. The zombie copies the player's armour and held items when it is created, but it does not carry the player's inventory.

Drops

A player zombie does not drop a copy of the dead player's inventory. The inventory stays with the player's death drops, as described under Spawning. Anything the zombie drops comes from its own death loot, see the table below. The zombie's experience reward is 5 points.

Zombie Player

No item drops.

Variants

Each variant is a separate entity with its own stats. Stats are the same for all three unless noted.

Zombie Player

The zombie player is the default variant and the one an infected player usually leaves. It is a zombie-based hostile mob and uses the standard zombie movement and attacks. It is the variant created when a player dies outside the underwater and husk biome conditions.

Husk Player

The husk player is created from a death in a desert, savanna or badlands biome. It is based on the husk and follows its movement and attacks.

Drowned Player

The drowned player is created from a death underwater. It is based on the drowned and moves through water as drowned do. The drowned player has a step height of 1 block, while the other two variants have 0.6 blocks.

Tips

  • Keep infection in check before dying. A player who dies infected leaves a player zombie, so curing the infection with a golden apple, or granting immunity with an enchanted golden apple, prevents the copy from being made. See Zombie Infection.
  • Avoid fights in water and in desert, savanna and badlands biomes if you do not want a drowned or husk player left behind. The biome and the water decide which variant is made, and a dead player's copy will be waiting at the death position.
  • Player zombies do not burn in daylight, so they remain a threat during the day as well as at night. Clear them with a ranged attack or by fighting in a narrow space.
  • Peaceful difficulty prevents player zombies from being created. Changing a world to Peaceful also makes existing player zombies despawn, since they hold no items.
