Leaves Be Gone

Leaves Be Gone is a server-side mod that changes how quickly leaves decay after they lose their connection to a log. It is added to Fear Nightfall as a small timing tweak to the base game. Felled trees lose their unsupported leaves within about a second instead of waiting for the random-tick lottery of vanilla, which makes cleared forests and tree-chopping builds tidy sooner. The mod adds no blocks, items, mobs or structures, and it does not gate or unlock anything.

Overview

Vanilla Minecraft decays leaves through random ticks. A leaf block that is not marked persistent and has no log in range (distance state 7) becomes randomly ticking, and it decays only when one of its random ticks lands on it. On a large tree this can leave canopies hanging for a long time after the trunk is gone.

Leaves Be Gone replaces that delay for the case where a leaf loses its log support. When a leaf becomes unsupported, the mod schedules a dedicated decay tick for it a few ticks later. The mod depends on Puzzles Lib, which must be installed alongside it. It runs on the server, so the server configuration controls the timing for all players, and clients do not need the mod to join.

In the Fear Nightfall pack the mod is present with its default settings. Its role is cosmetic and practical: forests and tree-chopping build areas clear faster, which matters in a pack where TreeChop fells whole trees in one action.

Content

The mod registers no blocks, items, mobs, structures, recipes, enchantments, effects, advancements, loot, trades, commands or keybinds. There is nothing to craft, find or collect, and no entries to add to the tables in the rest of the wiki.

The mod affects the leaf blocks that the pack already contains, so its effect shows wherever trees grow. The following pages cover the places where that is most visible:

  • Biomes lists every biome in the pack, including the forests, taigas and swamps where the horror structures are concentrated.
  • Dead Forest and Coniferous Forest are two forest biomes added by Biomes O' Plenty.
  • Structures lists the structure overview for the pack, including the structures that stand in wooded areas.
  • Leaves describes the vanilla leaf blocks whose decay the mod changes.

Mechanics

Decay on log loss. When a leaf block's distance state becomes 7, and the leaf is not persistent, the mod schedules a leaf decay tick at the leaf's position. The delay is a random value between the configured minimum and maximum decay times. With the default configuration, the delay is between 5 and 19 game ticks (about 0.25 to 1 second). When the tick is due, the leaf receives a random tick from its own block type, and vanilla rules then decide whether it decays.

Separate queue. Each world has its own decay queue, which is processed once per tick. Up to 65,536 decay entries are handled in one tick. Felling a very large tree queues many entries at once, and they are cleared within a few ticks at most.

Bypassing random tick speed. Scheduled decays are run directly, not through the random-tick loop. A leaf that is due to decay therefore decays even when the randomTickSpeed game rule is set to 0. Vanilla random ticks still run on the leaves as before.

Persistence. Pending decay entries are saved with each chunk and restored when the chunk loads. Pending entries survive a server restart. If the mod is removed, the saved data is left in the chunk as unused data.

Mixed leaf types. The mod has an optional rule, ignore_other_leave_types, which is off by default. When it is on, a leaf that touches a different leaf type is treated as unsupported, so mixed-species canopies no longer hold each other up. The configuration notes that this rule does not work properly with trees that generate different leaf blocks, such as azalea. Blocks that are not in the #minecraft:leaves block tag are not queued for decay by the mod.

Progression. None. The mod does not gate any content or change any recipe.

Changes to vanilla

  • Leaves that lose log support decay within 5 to 19 ticks instead of waiting for random ticks. Vanilla random ticks still apply, so a leaf can also decay through the vanilla path before its scheduled tick is due.
  • Decay runs even when randomTickSpeed is 0.
  • Leaves on a felled tree disappear faster and more uniformly than in vanilla. The mod does not change leaf drops.
  • Chunk data gains a new leavesbegone:random_block_ticks entry for chunks with pending decays.
  • The optional mixed-leaf rule, when enabled, treats a leaf that touches a different leaf type as unsupported, even when it is next to a log.

In Fear Nightfall

The pack uses the mod's default server configuration, and its settings are not changed by the pack's changelog. The values in effect on the server are:

Setting Value Meaning
minimum_decay_ticks 5 Earliest delay before an unsupported leaf decays
maximum_decay_ticks 20 Upper bound for the delay
ignore_other_leave_types false Mixed-species leaves keep each other in place

The mod has no horror-specific behaviour. Its effect is most visible in the forests that the pack's horror structures are placed in, because those are the areas where trees are most common. In tree-heavy builds, combine it with TreeChop for a clean result; TreeChop removes the logs and this mod removes the leaves that they were holding up.
