Enchantment Descriptions

Enchantment Descriptions is a client-side tooltip mod by Darkhax, added to Fear Nightfall to explain what each enchantment does. It adds no items, blocks, mobs or structures. When a player hovers over an enchanted item or an enchanted book, it adds a short line of description beneath each enchantment name, so a player can see the effect without looking it up elsewhere. Because the pack includes many enchantments from other mods, the descriptions are most useful for the modded enchantments that vanilla tooltips do not explain.
Overview
The mod is a small text add-on. It registers no enchantments of its own and changes no enchantment's behaviour, recipe, loot table, trade or spawn. Its only effect is what the tooltip displays. It runs on the client, and the pack's copy also loads on the server, where its own logic does nothing. The server still needs the mod's two required libraries, Bookshelf and PrickleMC, to start (see Multiplayer and Server Setup).
Content
The mod ships English descriptions for 167 enchantment keys, of which 166 are usable. They cover:
- Vanilla enchantments: all 42 enchantments of Minecraft 1.21.1, including the curses Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing, and the newer Breach, Density and Wind Burst. The pack's own enchantments are catalogued in the Enchantments overview.
- Improved EXP: 82 descriptions, the largest group. Many describe curse-like effects such as harm, unstable, weakness and the fear-of effects, and others describe positive effects such as flight, levitation and speed.
- Dungeons Enchantments: 17 descriptions.
- Shield+: 8 descriptions.
- Better Archeology: 4 descriptions.
- Create Stuff Additions: 4 descriptions.
- Grapple Mod: 3 descriptions.
- Deeper Darker: 2 descriptions.
- Endless Biomes: 2 keys, one of which is unusable (see Mechanics).
- Go Fish: 1 description. Fishing in general is covered on the Fishing page.
- Hunter's Return: 1 description.
- Stalwart Dungeons: 1 description.
A description appears only when its enchantment is present in the game. Enchantments from mods that are not in the pack simply have no entry in use.
Mechanics
- Placement: each description is inserted as a new line directly below its enchantment's own line in the tooltip. It applies to any item that carries enchantments, including tools, Weapons, Armor and enchanted books. The description is built from the enchantment's translation key, so the text comes from the language file and not from the enchantment itself.
- Shift to reveal: by default, descriptions show at all times. The option
require_keybindhides them until the Shift key is held, and then a dark-gray line reading "Hold shift to view enchantment descriptions." appears at the end of the enchantment list. This key is fixed to vanilla Shift and does not follow the keybind menu (see Controls and Keybinds). - Enchanting table only: the option
only_in_enchanting_tablelimits descriptions to the enchanting table screen. It is off by default. - Books only: the option
only_on_bookslimits descriptions to enchanted books. It is off by default. - Master switch: the option
enabledturns the whole mod off. It is on by default. - Custom text: the options
prefix,suffix,activate_textandstylechange the wording and colour of the lines. By default, the prefix and suffix are empty and the style is dark gray. - Unusable entry: the Endless Biomes enchantment Shared Pain has a language key with no valid suffix, so no description ever appears for it.
- Other languages: the English file holds the full set. Other language files carry only part of it, with between 3 and 167 enchantment keys depending on the language.
Changes to vanilla
The mod changes only the item tooltip. Hovering over an enchanted item shows the extra lines. Nothing else in the game changes, and the enchantments themselves work exactly as they do without the mod.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack's change log records no changes to this mod. It runs with its default options, which are set in the client-side configuration file generated by PrickleMC. Because many of the descriptions for Improved EXP and the horror-themed enchantments describe harmful or unsettling effects, the tooltip is a useful way to check what a curse does before equipping it. For the horror setting of the pack, see Horror and Spooky Content. The full set of mods is listed in the Mod List.
