Easy Magic

Easy Magic is a content-light mod for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge that changes the vanilla enchanting table. The table keeps its items after the menu is closed, gains an optional reroll button for its enchantment offers, and lets chiseled bookshelves count toward enchanting power. The mod adds no mobs, structures, biomes or recipes, and only one block, which is the replacement table itself.

Because every enchanting table in the world is affected, the mod changes the enchanting workflow for all players in the pack. Players who use enchanting will notice the changes straight away. For the pack's broader enchanting context, see Enchantments.

Overview

Easy Magic replaces the enchanting table with a version that is easier to use between sessions. Vanilla tables return the enchantable item and any lapis lazuli to the player when the menu closes. The mod keeps these items in the table instead, so a player can leave, come back and continue without losing track of them. The rest of the enchanting system stays close to vanilla: the same enchantment costs and offers are computed by the base game, and the enchantment levels come from the same bookshelf rules, with the chiseled bookshelf addition described below.

The mod is written for a single purpose and does not add any new progression. Enchanting is still gated by access to an enchanting table, and the materials needed are the same as in vanilla. What changes is how the table handles items, rerolls and power sources.

The mod requires Puzzles Lib. It has no optional integrations with other mods.

Content

Easy Magic adds one block and no items.

  • Enchanting table. The replacement block has the same name and description as the vanilla enchanting table. The vanilla enchanting table item is repointed at it, so placing a vanilla table item places the Easy Magic table. Its block entity holds the three item slots and acts as a worldly container for hoppers and other automation.
  • Converted tables from other mods. Any other enchanting table block in the registry is converted into a generated copy of the Easy Magic table when the game starts. Their vanilla-style use is blocked by the lock described under Mechanics.
  • Screen. The enchanting screen is replaced with a version that has a reroll button, per-slot enchantment hints and a book that is hidden by default.
  • Chiseled bookshelf tooltip. A client overlay shows the book under the cursor when it is held over a chiseled bookshelf.

The mod does not add enchantments, effects, potions, loot, trades, advancements or sounds. Its tags only define which items are used as catalysts (see Mechanics). For the pack's other content with a magic theme, see Magic and Spellcasting.

Mechanics

Persistent items

When the menu is closed, the enchantable item and catalysts stay in the table. Players can take them back out from the table. Hoppers and other automation can insert and extract through the table's side access:

  • Slot 0, the enchantable item, can only be extracted when it is enchanted or is an enchanted book.
  • Slot 1, the enchanting catalyst, takes lapis lazuli by default.
  • Slot 2, the reroll catalyst, is only present when the dedicated reroll catalyst option is on.

Enchanting power

The mod keeps the vanilla bookshelf scan and adds a count of chiseled bookshelf books. The total is the vanilla bookshelf power plus the number of books in chiseled bookshelves divided by 3, then scaled to the maximum of 15. A table with no bookshelves has no power. Chiseled bookshelves only count when they sit at the position set by the chiseled bookshelf power option, which by default is exactly two blocks from the table along its facing axis.

The chiseled bookshelf count is applied only when the vanilla bookshelf power is 0. This means a chiseled bookshelf is not stacked on top of normal bookshelves for the same table.

Enchantment offers

The offers are computed by the base game's enchantment cost and enchantment list functions. The mod zeroes the costs of slots below the required level, and clears the vanilla clue fields, so the offers are never shown as vanilla clues. The mod shows its own hints instead. The default hint mode is SINGLE, which reveals one random offer for each slot. The other modes are NONE and ALL.

Reroll

The reroll button appears only when the server enables it, which is the default. Clicking it sets a new random enchantment seed for the player and recomputes the offers for the current item. The reroll cost has two parts:

  • an experience cost, which is 5 experience points by default; the server can change it to take enchantment levels instead;
  • a catalyst cost, which is 1 item by default.

Creative players do not pay either cost. A cost of 0 makes that part of the reroll free. The button is only usable when the player has enough experience and catalyst.

By default the reroll takes lapis lazuli from slot 1, so rerolls use the same item as enchanting. With the dedicated reroll catalyst option turned on, a third slot is added for the catalyst item, which is amethyst shards by default. The first two slots move left when the option is on. Changing this option in an existing world moves the items already in the table, so turn it on before any table has items in it.

Vanilla table lock

With the vanilla table lock option on, which is the default, any vanilla enchanting table in the world cannot be used. The table shows "Unable to open. Break and replace to use." A player must break the table and place the Easy Magic table in its place. Tables listed in the unaltered enchanting tables tag are exempt. That tag is empty by default.

Chiseled bookshelf sync

Chiseled bookshelves send all of their book slots to clients when they change. Vanilla does not do this, so the tooltip overlay shows the books the server holds.

Changes to vanilla

  • Items stay in the table. Closing the menu does not return items to the player, which is the most visible change. Players who expect vanilla behaviour will find their items still inside the table when they come back.
  • Vanilla tables are locked. Placing a vanilla enchanting table in a world with the lock on has no effect until it is replaced. Existing vanilla tables are affected too, which matters for worlds that were started before the mod was added.
  • Enchanting power counts chiseled bookshelves. Chiseled bookshelves with books contribute power, which vanilla does not allow.
  • Reroll is added. Vanilla has no reroll. The mod adds it as a paid action.
  • The enchanting book is hidden. The vanilla book on the enchanting screen is hidden by default, and the vanilla slot clicks and tooltips are replaced.
  • World generation converts tables. When world generation places an enchanting table, the default option swaps it for the Easy Magic table. Blocks in chunks that were generated before the mod was added are not changed.
  • Vanilla table item repointed. Placing the vanilla enchanting table item places the Easy Magic table.

No changes are made to the rest of the base game, including combat, hunger, mob spawns, biomes, vanilla loot, recipes, trades and tags.

In Fear Nightfall

The pack ships Easy Magic with its default configuration. The pack made no pack-specific changes to the mod's options or code.

The defaults that matter in the pack are these:

  • The vanilla table lock is on, so any vanilla enchanting table generated in the pack's structures before the mod was added must be broken and replaced before it can be used. Tables generated after the mod was added are converted to the Easy Magic table automatically.
  • World generation conversion is on, so an enchanting table placed by a structure during generation becomes an Easy Magic table.
  • Rerolls are enabled, costing 5 experience points and 1 lapis lazuli.
  • Enchanting power is capped at 15, and chiseled bookshelves count toward it at the facing position.

The mod adds no mobs, so the horror content of the pack is unaffected by it. Its changes apply in the same way during the day and at night.

Tips

  • Keep spare lapis lazuli near the table. A reroll takes one lapis lazuli by default, so a few spare items make rerolling practical in a long session.
  • Rerolls are paid in experience, 5 points each by default, so keep some experience in reserve before enchanting.
  • Chiseled bookshelves at the default facing position add enchanting power, but only on a table that has no normal bookshelf power.
  • Break and replace any vanilla table found in an old structure before trying to use it. The message on the table says what to do.
  • A hopper on the table's side can feed it lapis lazuli. Slot 0 only lets items out once they are enchanted.
